Minutes of 09/10/2009

1. Attended 09/10/2009 : Frank Rickey, Pat Schwind, Rich Woods, Mark Sordahl, Bill Blewster, Keith Cyrnek, Linda & Cecil Ash, Chris “Big Guns” Braughton, Powell Gammill, Barb Bentley, Geri Seckinger, Olga Strickland, Steve Avilla, Michael Kielsky, Kathleen Tranchese, Gerald Williams, Joan Walling, Rene Price, Jim Soudriette & our speakers Barbara Blewster & John Thrasher.

   John Birch Society member Barbara Blewster, spoke on the subject, “Problems with Education Today”. Barb defended the “We’d be better off w/o Public Schools” position, citing the Communist Manifesto, which called for the abolition of Child Labor, & promoted universal public education. She gave a very detailed presentation, with crime statistics going back to the late 1600's from Massachusetts, & the 1800's from Virginia, which supposedly indicate those areas had much less crime before the advent of public education.

   Barb quoted extensively from the work of Dr. Max Rafferty, published in 1967, who stated that the purpose of Education is to:

   1. Pursue the Truth.

   2. Hand down the cultural heritage of the prevailing race. A corollary: Multiculturalism is a step toward One World Government.

   3. Challenge conventional thinking.

   4. Help the individual realize their full potential.

   5. Insure survival of our nation.

   Barb criticized the Carnegie & Rockefeller Foundations, for promoting ideas that seek to eradicate competitive thinking skills. They supported the "Doctrine of Contentment", which leads to "social serfdom". Their goal was to greatly concentrate the power of the Education Establishment. Barb believes the best control of the system is local, & the less centralized the better.

   Barb feels that our traditional public school education today undermines:

   1. Marriage, Family & Home life.

   2. Limiting sexual activity to marriage only.

   3. The Sanctity of Life.

   4. Preservation of Private Property Rights.

   5. The Connection between work & rewards: "If you don't work you don't eat.

   6. Right & Wrong are Absolutes.

   7. National Sovereignty.

   Finally, Barb cited the history of Marva Wells, a Black teacher in a very depressed area of Chicago, who produced amazing students for decades, (in the mid 1900's), using a "classical" education, strong on the "3 R's", with lots of discipline to boot.

   Professional educator & committed Lefty, John Thrasher provided the liberal counterbalance. John's been a music teacher & band instructor, at the High School, Jr. High, & college level for decades. He taught at Glendale Comm. College for 30+ years. He’s not an ideologue, & agreed with Barb that many school systems spend too much on “admin”, but not enough on real teaching or materials for students.

   John however is a strong proponent of Public Education, & feels that if the individual principals & teachers had a greater hand in the decision making process in our public school systems, that the results would be much better, & we wouldn't hear so much talk about "those lazy teachers & overpaid, overbearing school system administrators".
